When a query is submitted, it scans the databases and provides a list of web addresses that matches your query.

What is the difference between indexing and ranking?

When a website is submitted to a search engine, a program called a spider, or bot, reads the content of the site, and, depending on what the spider finds, the site is added to the search engine database. This is known as indexing.
After a site has first been indexed in a search engine, it is common to find that it does not rank very well on it's chosen keywords. This is because when the site is indexed the search engine does not record all of the relevant information needed for the database, usually only recording the URL.
A few weeks after this happens, the spider revisits the site, and completes the in depth analysis of the site, recording the meta tags, title, body text and other components of the site needed in order for the site to be found in the database when a search is performed. This process is called ranking, as the search engine can now relate the site to particular keywords, and so will be able to rank it within search results.

What are Spiders?

A spider is a program used by a search engine to index the World Wide Web content. Spiders captures specific information about a page some capture the title and the first 1,000 characters of content, some captures the title and "description" meta tag, some look for only the keywords and some use the combination of all of these methods.

How will people find your web site ?

Your pages must be built properly and they must be registered in various search engines, directories and link lists, in order to have maximum exposure. When we design a site, we carefully consider how to best maximize it's visibility to the search engines, crawlers, spiders and robots. We use special wording and keywords in the page title, page text and in special tags within the HTML code, which aren't visible to humans reading the page. These, and other techniques we employ, assist the automatic search routines of the crawlers, spiders and robots, such as those used by Alta Vista, to get your site listed properly. In addition, we provide a promotion service which will get your site or page registered in hundreds of search engines, link lists, directories.

How long does this take? Will I see results right away?

Each engine indexes at a different rate, but as a general rule, you must allow at least 2 months before search engines will apply ranking to new content. In Google, most experts agree that new content is placed in a reserve for at least 4 months before it even has a chance to achieve good ranking. This is called the "Sandbox Effect". According to this popular theory, new web pages and links are placed in a "quarantine" for at least 4 to 6 months of evaluation before they are allowed to gain any top rankings.

This does take time, but before long there will be visitors arriving at your site from all directions!

What is spamming?

Spamming is a term commonly used on the internet to describe the practice of overloading search engines with information in order to gain good ranking. There are several practices that can be classed as search engine spamming. The most common of these are:
Bombarding the search engines with submissions, even when the site in question has already been indexed and ranked. This is an attempt to get the search engine to spider the site again, in order to get better ranking or even multiple entries and can often lead to sites being dropped from the search engine database altogether.
Including multiple repetitions of keywords in the meta tags of a site. This is an attempt to make the search engines believe that a site has the most relevant information for a particular search, and so should be highly ranked. This approach no longer works as a search engine considers many more elements of a page when ranking sites, including the title tag, body text, the description tag, even page names. If these elements are not up to scratch then the site will never come top, no matter the amount of keywords used.
